Republic of Cuba
Capital: Havana
President: Raul Castro
Official Language: Spanish
Population: 11,269,400

Following Christopher Columbus' discovery of it in 1942, Cuba was developed over the next several centuries into a Spanish colony that served not only for plantations, but also for the launching point of Spanish bound treasure fleets carrying Gold from Mexico and Peru. Spanish rule over time grew more repressive sparking rebellions that were harshly dealt with until the United States intervened during the Spanish-American war in 1898. The following treaty of Paris in 1902 established official Cuban independence. During 1959 Cuba was overtaken by Fidel Castro with the help of the Soviets, however, following the withdrawal of Soviet support, the country underwent an economic decline in the 1990's.
